Using the PRINTER

The last time I tried to use a printer from TB, it was probably an old Epson dot-matrix. Looks like I need something more than "OPEN #1:PRINTER" these days. What am I missing?

Using the PRINTER

If you're using a Windows version of TB, you shouldn't need anything more. If you're using a DOS version, you will probably have problems printing to a USB printer or a "Winprinter" that doesn't have its own internal fonts but relies on the Windows driver to supply them.

What printer do you have and what OS and TB version?

If you take the following

If you take the following code sample (which I pulled from the manual) and print it, does it work?

open #1: Printer
print #1: "Beginning list:"
for i = 1 to 20
   print #1: i
   print i
next i
print #1: "end of list"
close #1
end

Also, is the HP you are using set as your default printer in Windows?

I have TB Gold 5.5 running on XP SP 2 and my default printer is an HP LaserJet 1020. Seems this should work.

You're right. Ii *should* work. Do you get an error message or crash? What happens when you try to print?

Pete; Tom,

Copied the code into a new file - ran fine (screen output) but no printer output. I also have an Epson color printer. I made that my default and tried again - no joy.

BTW - no errors of any sort reported - absolutely transparent. TB reports successful completion for this file.

There is something, though. I am running TB 5.5 but couldn't find an installation file on the CD - assumed this was because they'd left the Bill Gates stuff behind (dll's, etc.). I actually installed TB 5.42 so that Windows would know where things were. Later, I copied TB 5.5 over the installed TB 5.42.

I don't see where that could be the root of this but maybe I'll uninstall/reinstall this weekend. Seems like, if TB 5.5 is setup to find printers - although I see no indication of that - it should find them no matter what was installed ahead of it.

's a puzzle ... :-)

Printing

Hi Ron,

XP may be spooling the print so it doesn't print immediately. You can change the print specification so that it prints immediately (see control panel help).

I have succesfully printed stuff from TB to a whole series of EPSON printers. Currently I have a color SCAN2000 that prints perfectly from TB operating under XP.

Good to hear from you, Big John (any luck on those icon files?).

I'm curious about a couple of things - others, please feel free to address.

Since you've read the previous, you'll know my v5.5 has no installation files. I went back and checked and they're just not there. Is that by design or do I have a faulty CD? Also, both CD's have a PDF manual for Silver - and I've seen a listing somewhere (think it was on this site but can't find it) expounding on the differences between Gold and Silver.

I've owned several versions of TB, starting in the mid-80's with the Amiga version, Classic for the PC, upgraded to Silver and later to Gold. I have hardcopy versions of the Silver and Gold manuals - and they aren't too dissimilar. Can't prove that just now - my Gold is at the office and Silver is here. But, when I've looked, they appeared similar (main difference seemed to be the numbering of chapters, etc).

My concern is that there may be functionality in Gold that I'm not aware of. I don't really think of myself as a serious programmer - really just use it to build tools. Lots of times, I suspect I'm doing work which has already been done and is in a library somewhere.

For instance, I recently needed to convert dates (other than STR$(DATE) for today) into that same format(2 digits year and julian day). Had a dickens of a time - ended up creating an array for a Julian calendar and picking from that.

So, is there a genuine PDF version of the Gold manual which includes some sort of reference to the other (how many thousand?) routines which purportedly make the difference between Silver and Gold? And, is my v5.5 CD faulty?

Been a busy week and week end - thanks for the info on the printer. I'll check it out.

Manuals

Hi Ron,

You should have three PDF manuals in the documents folder:
Gold_A is identical to the main silver manual.
Gold_B is identical to the silver manual Chapter 22/23
Gold_C is specific to the Gold version and contains chapters 24 to 27.

In terms of functionality I don't think there is any difference between Gold and Silver. The difference is in the library modules and the fact that the source code is included with the libraries.

When you say your CD has no installation files - I assume you mean there was no installer? Previous versions of TB used a built in Windows interface called XVT. For this to work with bound executable programs it was necessary to have 3 DLL files installed in the c:\windows\system folder. Version 5.5b19 addresses Windows APIs directly and does not use XVT so it doesn't need the DLL files. However, programs that were bound with earlier versions of TB still need the DLL files. I assume this is what is missing from the ICONEX program. I will send you a set of DLL files by e-mail.
