V5.5 Install

Well, back to square one.

WRT my issue where TB can’t find the printer (at the office, it finds the color printer – not my default- and wreaks havoc with the fonts in my routine and does not print) and the only thing I thought might be wrong was that I installed V5.42 and overwrote it (the exec file) with V5.5 (as I mentioned).

The saga continues. Today I removed TB from my machine and simply copied V5.5 (all files) into the Program directory. Obviously XP will know nothing about this until I tell it so I went to one of my *.tru files and selected “properties”, expecting to be able to select TB to open the files so XP would know the association.

Interestingly, I was not able to select TBGold to open the file at all. I could select it but it never would show on the list. However, TBSystem would appear just fine (but then only to run, compile, bind, etc.)

This gets neater – there is, on the V5.5 CD, a text file called “uninstal” which contains what look like registry entries and the like to be uninstalled.

I checked again – there is no “setup” or “install” file on the CD.

Again, do I just have a faulty CD or is there some trick I don't know (BTW, running the canned print routine from V5.5 still accomplishes nothing).

Version 5.5b19

Hi Roger,

The version of TB 5.5b19 that I have came in a zip file that only contains TBgold.EXE, TBsystem.EXE and Bindwin.rtp. The installation instructions mention installing version 5.42 first then replacing the existing files above with the verion 5.5b19 files.

The date on the above files is 27 FEB 2005

I can send you a copy of the zip file that I used if you like.

I would agree that this is not exactly a satisfactory way of distributing the product - it should be released as a full setup file like all the other versions.

The issue with the printer is a mystery to me because I have never had any problems with any of my Epson printers, although there have been reports in the Forum about printing problems with certain HP models.

Big John ... not Roger :-)

Actually, that's exactly how I did the installation - and the only thing I had to suspect. My CD version has the same 02/27/05 date. BUT - with no installation instructions as far as I know.

Really wierd. I suppose I'll just reinstall V5.42 and copy V5.5 back over the executables. I still think it odd that I couldn't associate the *.tru files with TBGold but could with TBSystem.

Oh well, if anybody has any other ideas ...

BTW, Still waiting for that icon file. Thanks.

Iconex

Hi Ron (sorry about renaming you as Roger),

I did e-mail the ICONEX file to you (19 May 08), but a few minutes ago I sent you another copy, plus the old DLL files because ICONEX was bound under version 5.31

I have also discovered some minor bugs in version 5.5b19 although these were not associated with printing.

John,

You were caught in my spam filter (used to do websites & such - get between 500 and 600 a day so it's easy to get lost in there).

I just whitelisted you - and got your e-mail.

Thanks

Here's a bit more info. I reinstalled V5.42 but before putting V5.5 in, I ran the same program I've been working on. There was a slight distortion where a couple of physical windows came together ... but when I hit the print button, it did!

I copied (for now) V5.5 into it's own folder and ran the program under it. The distortion was gone but the printer did not work.

So, for me at least, the printing issue seems to be associated with V5.5.

New editor

Hi Ron,

I have just completed the new TB editor ready for beta testing. This time it comes in a complete installer package and installs successfully on Win95, Win98, XP and Vista - (because I personally checked them out on my range of computers). It is not suitable for the Mac.

The truncation of hard copy listings has been resolved successfully.

Big John,

I'd be interested in that. I'm supposing this is still v5.5?

Printing

Hi Ron,

I assume you are doing a program listing when you refer to printing. Versions prior to 5.5b19 use the conventional OPEN #1: PRINTER technique to do a program listing. Version 5.5b19 uses a separate library module called PWLIB to do the printing. It is a much more flexible approach so it would be good to get this right. Unfortunately the actual print instruction is inside the OBJECT sub-routine, e.g.

CALL Object(17,pwin_id,"","",v)

method 17 is undocumented and I have no access to it so if that is the root of the trouble then there is not much I can do about it.

On the other hand, if the conventional OPEN#1:PRINTER works then I can offer the user the option of a DO LISTING program that uses the conventional print method.

John,

Actually, I'm referring to being able to print from the routine to the printer. [OPEN #n: PRINTER, PRINT #n, etc] I have always had the problem reported by Jerry Jackson (truncated listings). My solution has been to copy to Word and print.

I'm kind of at a loss concerning PWLIB.When you mentioned it earlier, I searched for it in the TB directory (no joy) and finally google'd it. Looked like some sort of "C" library module ("C" standing for "Cryptic" as far as I'm concerned).

I've looked through (but haven't really studied) Chapter 19. Since "Method 17" lives somewhere between 0-13 and 20-26, how did it get in there and be undocumented?

Printing

Hi Ron,

If you get truncated listings then try:
OPEN #99: PRINTER
SET #99: MARGIN maxnum

This should sort out truncation.

PWLIB is a special library (not generally available) that makes the printer a virtual window. The dimensions of the window (A4 paper) are 2800x3900 pixels so it produces very high quality print.

Methods 14 to 19 are undocumented - don't ask me why.
